If your idea of lo-fi is them cuddly Vivian Girls, then approach Wavves with caution. Pairing Ariel Pink's freakier excesses with the spazz-blah of Times New Viking, San Diego oddball Nathan Williams unloads one distorto-noise-pop jam after another on this debut. There are hooks to be enjoyed. That's for sure. But the dude pummels your noggin with space-age distortion and overly caffeinated choogle in the process. The best track here is "Vermin," a searing chunk of bubblegum/surf psychedelia.
