Phase One: The Early Years 1958-1964

Phase One: The Early Years 1958-1964 by Waylon Jennings
Released: Mar 2002
Label: Hip-O (Uc)
If you don't have the cash for Journeys, Jennings' six-CD set for Bear Family, Phase One is the most comprehensive overview of his formative years. Although Jennings had recorded a single or two while playing bass for Buddy Holly (who produced him), it wasn't until after his mentor died in 1959 that he put together his own band (he also did some deejaying in the southwest). In those days Jennings wasn't pure country -- he tried anything: rock 'n' roll, blues, RnB and even some folk revival stuff. Here we find him covering, among other things, Ian Tyson's classic anthem "Four Strong Winds."
