Weekend's sound neatly bisects two other flatly principled bands, A Place to Bury Strangers' wind-tunnel distorted drones and Beach Fossils' jangly motoric ellipticals. Their second album Jinx is predictably brighter than their crunchy debut Sports. The austere, stiff beats are now broken up by chiming guitar melodies reminiscent of The Cure and Cocteau Twins, while Shaun Durkan's bratty echo of a voice recalls Wavves; there are also hints of Spacemen 3 or a really zonked Primal Scream when he repeats over and over "I want to fade away." Make sure to stay for the pretty "Oubliette."
