Lo Mato by Willie Colon
Released: Aug 2006
Label: Fania
An astonishing three salsa classics came off of 1973's Lo Mato: "Todo Tiene Su Final," "El Dia de Suerte" and "Calle Luna, Calle Sol." These songs became staples for both Colon and vocalist Hector Lavoe after they parted ways; they contain a palpable sadness that perhaps reflected Colon's difficulties with Lavoe's spiraling drug use. Musically, the ensemble couldn't have been tighter, and Lavoe sings amazingly well -- his voice boyish and clear, his delivery emotionally nuanced. The full album title translates to "I'll kill you if you don't buy this LP" (hence the controversial cover).
