Willie and Family Live (Bonus Tracks)
Released: Apr 1978
When released in 1978, Willie and Family Live puzzled those who were familiar only with his crossover hits. Considering Nelson was one of pop's biggest stars at the time, this was quite a number of people. In all honesty, this sprawling live set is closest in aesthetic to the Allmans' At Fillmore East and The Dead's Europe '72. By filtering vintage honky-tonk and Texas swing through extended improvisation rooted in rock and jazz, Nelson invented a new kind of "hippie redneck" music that united most of the major strands of American folk and pop music in the 20th century.
