Conceived as the soundtrack to a graphic novel and inspired by the rock, goth and techno-pop tunes they grew up on, this female-fronted Dutch pomp-metal quintet's sixth album doesn't land very far from the sort of flashdance-rock that octave-climbing divas Pat Benatar and Laura Branigan made in the '80s. Combine that bombast with string and piano orchestrations, intermittent heavy chugging, a bit of Spanish guitar, occasional witchy whispering about "the bowels of hell" and a dancey number called "Sinead" that may or may not be about O'Connor, and you've got The Unforgiving.
