Side projects galore kept Wolf Parade apart for nearly three years, but the separation has only strengthened their collective creativity. Co-songwriters Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug mesh their contributions more cohesively here, flirting with the idiosyncrasies of their debut while molding them into spaced-out epics and moody jams. The influence of Modest Mouse still lingers, with playful piano plunks, whimsical whirrs and scatty guitar noodling. But an aching for the '70s lends some charismatic twists with the spacey Bowie-like "An Animal in Your Care" and the proggy "Kissing the Beehive."
