Black Codes (From The Underground)
Released: Jan 1985
At only 23, Marsalis had already launched a promising jazz and classical recording career, helped birth the energetic Young Lions movement and become a celebrity. The buzz about his jazz career grew deafening with this brilliantly sharpened 1985 LP, considered the peak of his stylistic imitations of Miles Davis. When Wynton and brother Branford hit their stride, they have the sparkling energy of great '60s bop partnerships, and Marsalis' writing emerges as yet another of his great gifts (he wrote every tune here except the penultimate one). An excellent LP and highlight of his early career.
