Think Of One
Released: Jan 1983
This was the first recording that inferred Wynton Marsalis had as much potential as a cultural leader as he did as a trumpeter. Fresh from Art Blakey's group, this LP shimmers with the kind of intensity that would define the Young Lions movement of the early '80s. "Knozz-Moe-King," the Marsalis-penned opener, is aggressively intellectual and intensely delivered, and his take on standards, like Thelonious Monk's title track, puts his shining tone and precise bandleading on full display. This was one of two Grammy-winning records he released in 1983.
