This enigmatic project by Dutch-born, L.A.-based visual artist Nick Van Hofwegen gets kudos for finding new angles around "alt-R&B" tropes. He achieves it by creating an Americanized version of European nu-funk. "Gloom" is reminiscent of '80s jazz-pop, "Feel Pain" could be an outtake from Rhye's album, and "Twentysomething" sounds like D'Angelo with a Continental twist. It's not totally original, but Van Hofwegen charms with his sweetly appealing falsetto. He suffuses himself in echoing reverb and synthesizers as he sings of lovemaking, and tells us there is "Nowhere" that he'd rather be.
