Biography
Young Galaxy's story isn't exactly the stuff of constellation myths, but it
is romantic in more than one sense of the word. First, the story of the
band, which consists of Catherine McCandless and her boyfriend, Stephen
Ramsay, is the story of a couple who met, fell in love and formed a band
together to jointly pursue their musical dreams. Second, the story takes
place in a couple of cities that are positively overrun with moony artistic
types. McCandless and Ramsay met in Vancouver, where years ago they began
working on material that would become Young Galaxy's. But before their own
project came to be, the couple moved to Montreal, where Ramsay took what
ended up being quite a long gig as a touring guitarist for another
cosmically named outfit, Stars. After he left amicably to focus on his work
with McCandless, Young Galaxy was snapped up by Arts & Crafts, a Canadian
label that's home to a stable of more dreamers, such as Broken Social Scene
and Feist. The band released an EP, formed a live band and took off on tour
with label-mates The Dears. In 2007, Arts & Crafts released Young Galaxy's
eponymous full-length debut.
