Well, it sure takes chutzpah to tap a children's choir for your very first single, as was the case with L.A.'s Youngblood Hawke last year and "We Come Running," which they include again here on Wake Up, their full-length debut. Such ambition factors all over the album, from their cinematic take on Phoenix's synth-rock in the opener "Rootless" to the whistling throughout "Dreams." "Sleepless Streets" even manages a new wave/reggae hybrid. The surface sheen can be a little blinding, sure, but none of this sextet's sticky steals are less than catchy.
