What's that? You say the whole neo-synth-rock thing is a passing fad? We refuse to believe it -- and so does Zoe, who, five years after their last album, is still pumping the stuff out with sweeping, cinematic style. In fact, Programaton breathes new life into the metallic sheen of synth-rock, filtering it through surprising new lenses, like the lilting vocals and enchanting guzheng (a Chinese zither) of "Game Over Shanghai," the thumping folksiness of "Andromeda," and the dreamy psych-pop of the whimsically titled "Ciudades Invisibles." A lovely, dramatic daydream of an album.
