Pivoting between archly ironic and wincingly sincere, Ben Folds is the multifaceted reflection of Gen X's arresting ambivalence. Leave him alone in front of a piano and strip away the rock 'n' roll ornamentation and what's left is just his voice and his lyrics, both of which he wields with surprising nuance.
