Big Al Downing

It's singers like Big Al Downing (and the perpetually overlooked Stoney Edwards) who prove the socio-cultural barriers supposedly dividing blues and country aren't nearly as thick as some would have us believe. Back to My Roots has it all, everything from funky soul-blues perfect for the local juke joint to Southern-fried rockabilly that would have any raunchy roadhouse swaying back and forth. The album's most touching song, however, is the country ballad "Please Help Me Mama." Just gorgeous.
