The notoriously ill-tempered Big Joe Williams sang like Muddy Waters and played guitar like John Lee Hooker, only with a primal edge neither musician held onto past their earliest recordings. Williams' violent playing often sounds like a man trying to strangle his guitar to death and even his up-tempo songs have an undercurrent of negativity. Cool stuff.
