With 1961's Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Bill Evans went from being a favorite of jazz musicians to being embraced by the public as a national musical treasure. Evans and his groundbreaking first trio (which forged a new way for piano/bass/drums to interact) are at their best here. When a song disappears from the next set, it means Evans was satisfied with it. Breathtaking.
