The 13th annual Latin Grammy Awards are coming up November 15, and the Latin Recording Academy whet our appetites at the end of September when it released its sprawling, surprising list of nominees. Behind on the year's awesomest Latin releases? Here's your opportunity to catch up. With a whopping 10 nominees in each of the four main categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist); new categories like Best Tropical Fusion Album and Best Pop/Rock Album; and a new openness to Portuguese-language albums in all categories, the nominees span the gamut.
As with any awards show, there are funny fixations and odd holes (the Regional Mexican nominations seem particularly limited), but there are also some pretty interesting surprises: The Album of the Year category alone, featuring everyone from pop stalwarts Reik to alt hip-hoppers ChocQuibTown to indie ingénue Carla Morrison to Arturo Sandoval, is a wonderland of strong, fascinating diversity. So hey, even if you're already up on all the year's big releases, there's at least plenty of fodder for debate -- plus, it makes for a pretty awesome playlist.
