2014 Oscars: Contenders for Original Song
by Barry Walters | March 2, 2014
Nearly every year when the Oscar nominations are announced, many music fans go "Huh?" when they get to the list of Best Original Song contenders. Although the Oscars aren't quite as inexplicable as the Grammys, they come close. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced a list of 75 contenders for the nomination, and as usual, thanks to the Academy's book of rules, it doesn't include some of the biggest movie songs of the year, like Anna Kendrick's rendition of "Cups (When I'm Gone)." This omission we understand: The bluegrass standard is nearly 100 years old. But it does include "Young and Beautiful," the popular haunted ballad from The Great Gatsby that revived Lana Del Rey's fortunes, and some similarly terrific tunes from Pharrell Williams, Gladys Knight, M83, U2 and others. Here, we've created a playlist that includes all of the available songs from the Academy's list, and put some of the best and biggest up front.
