A Punk Christmas: No Covers Allowed

by Evan Lucy  |  December 10, 2013

There's something special about Christmas music -- but the last thing the world needs is yet another rendition of "Jingle Bells." Sadly, most of the current emo/punk scene's M.O. is to up the BPM on classic Christmas songs, throw in some palm-muting and call it a day. Still, there are a number of acts out there who refuse to settle for simply covering these songs, stretching themselves to create their own soon-to-be Christmas classics -- at least within the scene.

Indeed, bands like New Found Glory, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Jimmy Eat World and more have all paid homage to the holiday season through original songs. Some are cynical (blink-182's "I Won't Be Home for Christmas"), some are spiteful (Fall Out Boy's "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out"), others are just plain joyful (Owl City's "Peppermint Winter"). And let's not forget about overachievers like MxPx and Relient K, who have actually recorded entire albums of almost all original Christmas songs. The spirit of the season is alive and well in this playlist of modern punk and emo Christmas originals -- all of which pair perfectly with a glass (or two) of spiked eggnog.
