American Authors' Holiday Picks

by Linda Ryan  |  December 3, 2013

Brooklyn-based group American Authors formed while its members -- Zachary Barnett, James Adam Shelley, Dave Rublin and Matt Sanchez -- attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. Their second single, "Best Day of My Life," made its way into the minds (and living rooms) of millions of Americans via a television ad from Lowe's. You thought maybe they were Mumford & Sons, right? And you were delighted to find another band that featured an earthy, alt-folky sound with super catchy songs, right? Yup, we knew it.

American Authors put together a playlist of, well, not exactly Christmas songs, although there are a few here. These are songs with an understated, uplifting vibe; songs that fit with the holiday season (despite nary a "ho, ho, ho" among them). Frontman Barnett says the songs are "a nice blend of upbeat, happy rock songs for family gatherings and opening gifts -- and more chill acoustic tunes that go great while sipping cocoa by the fire. I'm a big fan of modern bands doing holiday covers, so I threw a couple in to spice up the holiday cheer."
