Catching Up with Brad Mehldau: 2010-2014
by Seth Colter Walls | March 4, 2014
The year 2013 was a little quiet for pianist Brad Mehldau—and now we can see why. The album from his new duo with drummer Mark Guiliana, Mehliana, is a monster. Full of power fusion-moves and smart electro-interventions, it was worth the wait. And, taken together with some prior releases from Mehldau, it’s starting to look like quite the eclectic decade for the performer. He’s collaborated with soprano Anne-Sofie Von Otter, played Steve Reich music on an album of modern classical music, covered Nirvana’s “Lithium” during a solo concert. And yes, he’s still turning out hot standards-jazz with his acoustic trio (just try their takes on “Brownie Speaks” and “Airegin”). Click play on the attached mix, and you’ll hear it all—everything from symphonic sweep to digital beat-crafting. Enjoy!
