Celebrating the 4th of July

by Linda Ryan  |  July 4, 2014

Ah … the 4th of July. This year, the holiday falls on a Friday, giving us a long weekend to recharge and reconnect with family and friends. And rather than use the time to debate red vs. blue, let's just take a moment to celebrate the day with some fine music. The majority of the songs on our playlist have more to do with an idyllic Americana feeling than patriotism. Think of the beauty and serenity of dusty roads, small towns and good times by the lake -- not fighter jets and cultural imperialism. There are some poignant moments sprinkled throughout, like The Impressions' old-school soul nugget "This Is My Country"; despite its feel-good sound, MKTO's "Thank You" is a scathing finger-wag at their parent's generation -- and an infectious pop song to boot. While we're talking about shoot-from-the-hip, telling-it-like-it-is songs, we could all learn a lesson from Kacey Musgraves' "The Trailer Song." But let's not get bogged down by heavy subject matter. This is, after all, a holiday. So we sprinkled in songs such as U2's "Beautiful Day," Pharrell's "Happy," and, of course, Katy Perry's "Firework." Enjoy, and have a happy and safe holiday weekend!
