Celebrity Playlist: Lucy Hale
by Linda Ryan | June 18, 2014
Long before she found an audience playing Aria on Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale was singing hits from Shania Twain and Britney Spears into her hairbrush. In fact, when she was 13, the Memphis, Tenn., native placed in the Top 5 on the singing competition show American Juniors -- one of the many short-lived spin-offs meant to rival American Idol. Still, her voice was impressive, and hoping to flush out singing opportunities, Hale and her mother moved to Los Angeles. Acting roles, however, came her way first. Five years as Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars has allowed Hale to amass a large and active fan base; armed with this support group, Hale felt the time was right to restart her singing career. In 2012, she was signed to Hollywood Records, and for the next two years, she flew to Nashville to record on the weekends, all while working on the show. It was an exhausting process, but one that showed exactly what she's made of.
Her debut, Road Between, offers 11 contemporary country pop songs with powerful, catchy hooks, all of which show off her flawless voice beautifully -- one reason we chose Hale as our Ones to Watch artist for June. To celebrate the release, we asked her to make a playlist of some of her favorite songs. The mix -- which features artists like Alanis Morissette, Alt-J, Bob Marley and Patty Griffin -- is made up of songs that help her fully relax on those long flights to and from Nashville. Enjoy.
