Deep-End Beats, August 2013
by Philip Sherburne | August 19, 2013
Sequencing this month's roundup of left-field dance music wasn't easy, because it's even more eccentric than usual, between bizarro-world funk from Black Dice's Eric Copeland, previously unreleased Mu-Ziq tracks from the early '90s and gloomy, atmospheric bass music from Raffertie. Then there's Helena Hauff's stripped-down acid house, Lil Silva's soulful U.K. funky and Fantastic Mr. Fox's retro-but-not-really-retro house to contend with, not to mention footwork (DJ Rashad, Traxman, Machinedrum), deep house (Osborne, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), electro-pop (Tirzah), and Gabriel Ananda and Dominik Eulberg's euphoric anthem "The Space Between Us." So we took a page from the insouciant title of Rashad's new single and decided not to give a darn. It's August, after all, so kick back and let the beats lead you where they may.
