Deep-End Beats, Nov. 2013
by Philip Sherburne | November 8, 2013
Rhythmic mutations abound in this month's roundup of essential underground dance music, from Special Request's reinvigorated "Amen" breaks to Machinedrum's ethereal hybrid of footwork and jungle. Chicago's DJ Rashad is back with a new album for Hyperdub that pushes footwork even further into the stratosphere, while Laurel Halo's new album for the same label finds her reprogramming the mind-body connection one twisted drum pattern at a time. Autechre are up to their usual tricks on the shuddering, static-streaked L-Event, turning texture and pulse inside out, while James Murphy channels Steve Reich (and Carl Craig) in an epic, awe-inspiring remix of David Bowie's "Love Is Lost." We've also got new tracks and remixes from Prins Thomas, Mala, Theo Parrish, Mount Kimbie, DJ Koze, Black Devil and more.
