Distrusting the slick commercialism of Nashville, Dwight Yoakam cut his teeth in L.A. cowpunk clubs (sometimes sharing bills with The Blasters), and toured with Hüsker Dü before his dyed-in-the-wool authenticity and astonishing talent turned the country music scene on its ear with 1986 debut Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. He is a true country-music scholar, and his tunes over the years have touched on George Jones, Western swing, Appalachia, rockabilly, Buck Owens and beyond -- the list goes on -- with a pure and natural effortlessness, all marked by his excellent lead-guitar playing and instantly recognizable Fender Telecaster sound.
