Great Indie B-Sides

Although the digital era has changed the way we approach B-sides -- extra songs on today's singles are often just more bits and bytes tacked on to a download -- indie bands of the last decade have kept the spirit of the flipside alive. Grizzly Bear have released an album of these tracks (Shields: B-Sides); Belle and Sebastian also put out an odds 'n' sods collection highlighted by a tropical remix of "I'm a Cuckoo" by the Avalanches. Amping up the grooves is certainly a common B-side tactic (see the space-disco vibes of Phoenix's "Lisztomania [Classixx Version]" or the laid-back funk of Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On [John McEntire Remix]"). However, other indie acts prefer to reserve this space for covers (Ra Ra Riot tackling Sparks), sonic experiments (sprawling songs by Arcade Fire and The National) or simply lesser-known songwriting nuggets (Best Coast, Toro Y Moi, Deerhunter). Take a spin through our playlist of choice indie B-sides from the last decade, and maybe you'll discover a diamond in the rough.
