Hip-Hop Editor's Picks: Summer 2014

by Mosi Reeves  |  August 28, 2014

Take this playlist as a snapshot of hip-hop sounds made during the past three months. There are the usual critic’s darlings: Shabazz Palaces, The Underachievers, The Roots and Common are represented. But you may not have expected anything from 50 Cent, whose “Hustler” is worth salvaging from the otherwise unmemorable Animal Ambition; or Iamsu!, whose “Ascension” is a keeper from Sincerely Yours. While I haven’t bought into the hype surrounding Young Thug, I can’t get his infectiously sloppy hook for Rich Gang's “Lifestyle” out of my head. And add me to the list of folks who were impressed by Lil Wayne's performance on “Believe Me,” even if I find the “comeback” buzz somewhat premature. Still, when good music hits, sometimes it’s better to not overanalyze it.
