Hot Rap Singles June 2012
by Mosi Reeves | May 30, 2012
This month's collection of new rap singles includes a stunning 27 tracks. There's the freshly reunited Goodie Mob (which, in light of Cee-Lo's flourishing solo career, now seems more like his backing band than a quartet of Dirty South pioneers) and their single "Fight to Win," which is getting play during telecasts of NBA playoff games. White-hot rapper 2 Chainz continues to convert rap-fan love into mainstream success with the Drake collaboration "No Lie." Kreayshawn re-emerges with "Breakfast," a single from her August debut album Somethin 'Bout Kreay -- it was originally titled "Breakfast (Syrup)," but the label changed it, since everyone knows that "syrup" is rap slanguage for codeine-laced drinks. Lupe Fiasco has "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)" and its controversial homage to Pete Rock & CL Smooth's seminal "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," which Pete himself has complained about on Twitter. Kevin McCall, who is mostly known for his appearance on Chris Brown's "Deuces," finally gets his own shot via "Naked," with help from Big Sean. Other album previews include A$AP Rocky ("Goldie"), Nas ("Daughters"), Slaughterhouse ("My Life"), David Banner ("Amazing," from his Sex, Drugs & Video Games mixtape), and Curren$y ("Jet Life"). Dig in.
