Next week, Avicii's fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief -- or, conversely, let out an anguished scream -- when the Swedish superstar DJ's debut album drops, and we find out exactly how "country" he's really gone. Here's a hint: not that much. Where "Wake Me Up" was deeply rooted in bluegrass, the new single "You Make Me" finds Avicii working at his more customary pop/dance fusion, with big, bold piano chords, a '60s-inspired chorus and plucky synth riffs that might even win over those who thought "Levels" was treacly and cloying. Is it even a proper dance track? Who knows, but we'll lead off our monthly roundup of EDM's biggest tunes with it anyway, because, duh, Avicii.
Meanwhile, Laidback Luke gives Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" an amped-up electro-house rework, ensuring that the summer's most ubiquitous hit will be just a little bit more inescapable, and he also lends his carnival-esque touch to Calvin Harris' "Thinking About You." Mat Zo is another of the month's heavy hitters, teaming up with Public Enemy's Chuck D for the crossover-bound "Pyramid Scheme." Check out the playlist for those tracks plus tunes from Rune RK (of "Calabria" fame, and also known as the Kompakt artist Kölsch), Sub Focus featuring Alex Clare, Kill the Noise, Danny Avila, Tiesto & Nari & Milani, The Bloody Beetroots and more.
