Indie's Australasian Invasion
by Annie Zaleski | July 26, 2013
During the last 35 years, Australia and New Zealand artists have created some of the most enduring and innovative rock, indie and pop music around. Credit for this goes to the stellar songwriting skills of these acts, from '80s groups that crossed over to the U.S. (INXS, Men At Work, Midnight Oil, Crowded House) to lo-fi and noise influencers (The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, Bailter Space) and pop geniuses (The Chills, The Go-Betweens, The Church). Today, plenty of newer bands are keeping the adventurous spirit of these pioneers alive, in the form of danceable electro-rock (Jagwar Ma, Gold Fields, Cut Copy), lush pop (Atlas Genius, Deep Sea Arcade) and quirky psychedelic rock (Tame Impala). Take a spin through the region's diverse music scene with this list of must-hear Australian and New Zealand artists.
