International Talk Like a Pirate Day
by Linda Ryan | September 19, 2014
It’s September 19th, so that can only mean one thing: it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day! This fun, irreverent holiday started back in 1996, but gained momentum in 2002 when humor columnist Dave Barry wrote a piece promoting the day. The "holiday" once again got a boost in 2006, when its cofounder John Baur appeared on the television show Wife Swap, and then on Jeopardy. It was a proud moment for sure when Alex Trebek introduced him as a "writer and pirate from Albany, Oregon." In 2008, Facebook came up with a "pirate" option for their language setting, which really made the day go viral because, well, the whole world is on Facebook!
This year, Krispy Kreme is reprising their International Talk Like a Pirate Day donut giveaway, which means a free glazed donut to anyone who orders in a pirate voice, or a dozen free donuts to anyone who comes in dressed as a pirate. Not a bad deal, matey!
So, here we've got some music to go with that donut: With songs about pirates, adventure, rum and sailing the seven seas, this playlist is pure escapism. Strap on your boots, bucko, and hit play … or we'll send you to Davy Jones' locker. Aaaargh!
