Johnny Cash's Extended Family
by Jim Allen | January 19, 2014
Despite his lone-wolf, Man in Black persona, Johnny Cash was a man who valued family above all else. Most people know that his life and career were profoundly affected by his deep relationship with his second wife, June Carter. June had a musical identity of her own: She was a member of The Carter Family, one of the earliest and most influential groups in country music. In turn, the children Johnny and June had together and apart, including Carlene Carter, John Carter Cash and Rosanne Cash (who has a brand-new album, The River & the Thread), represent another generation of singers and songwriters. By the time you get into the artists who have been married to Johnny and June's children, like Rodney Crowell, Marty Stuart and Nick Lowe, it becomes clear that the branches of the Cash family tree are heavy with musical fruit. So consider this the sonic equivalent of one of those full-family photos where everybody squeezes together as tightly as possible to fit their faces into the picture for posterity's sake.
