Label Spotlight: Average Joe's
by Nick Murray | June 18, 2013
Founded in 2008 by former So So Def studio hand Shannon Houchins and golfer turned rapper Colt Ford, Average Joe's was an unusual label from day one, cornering the market on Ford's signature "hick-hop" and proceeding outward from there. In one direction, this brought them toward "outlaw" and Red Dirt country artists like Kevin Fowler and JB and the Moonshine Band; in the other, it brought them toward actual rappers, cast-aside veterans like Nappy Roots and D12's Bizarre. In the meantime, Ford, Bubba Sparxxx and the next generation of hick-hoppers (guys like The Lacs and Lenny Cooper) continue holding down the middle, releasing new albums and the essential annual Mud Digger label comps.
