Label Spotlight: ZZK Records
by Monika Fabian | August 19, 2013
In the mere five years since the label's founding, ZZK Records and Argentine digital cumbia have become practically synonymous. The Buenos Aires-based indie label emerged from a local party night called "Zizek Club" that showcased many of the DJ-producers who now form part of its resident collective -- including label founders Diego Bulacio (alias Villa Diamante), Pedro Canale (aka Chancha Via Circuito) and U.S. expat Grant Dull (aka El G).
ZZK stands today as a hub of adventurous and experimental dance music from Argentina and other far-flung locales in the global bass universe. An unsurprising feat, really, considering its crew includes artists like Tremor, El Remolon, Chancha Via Circuito and others who figure among the creative crème de la crème of nu-cumbia. ZZK's robust catalog of solo efforts and compilations demonstrates an impressive breadth of folkloric and futuristic permutations yielded from South American rhythms.
Get up to speed on this prolific label's tunes with our playlist, then top that off with a listen to ZZK's latest compilation, ZZK Sound, Vol. 3, which features the newest cuts from the collective along with choice tracks by global bass heavy-hitters like Thornato, Jairo Mendez and Javier Estrada.
