Latin's Queer Icons
by Rachel Devitt | June 28, 2013
Ricky Martin was greeted with so much fanfare when he came out, you'd think he was the only gay Latin artist to have ever shaken his bon-bon. OK, it's not as simple as that, we know: Martin's self-outing was a rather fabulously badass act on a personal and professional level, and, truth be told, Latin pop stars aren't exactly tripping over themselves rushing out of the closet. But Ricky certainly isn't completely alone: He joined a small but mighty group of out-and-proud Latin artists in a wide range of styles, from merengue glamazon Rita Indiana to Chilean electro-popper Alex Anwandter, flamboyant pop icon Juan Gabriel to the late, great, ferocious ranchera royalty Chavela Vargas. And these brave souls are backed by a host of fierce allies in Latin music, artists ranging from Willie Colon to Cafe Tacvba to Gloria Trevi, who have made their support for their LGBT fans and for queer rights clear in songs, statements and more. ¡Viva la fiesta Pride!
