Lilith Fair Revisited

About this playlist

It's amazing to look back and see just how diverse the three-year Lilith Fair festival was -- covering not just the singer-songwriter classics you remember (Joan Osbourne's "One of Us," Meredith Brooks' "B*tch," Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home") but also the cutting edge of R&B (Erykah Badu, circa the blunt "Tyrone"), country (Dixie Chicks at the time of their vicious anti-abuser fable "Goodbye Earl") and rap (Lauryn Hill won every award in the book largely thanks to "Doo Wop (That Thing)"). This was the era of Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole and other "sensitive" songwriters with guitars, but also of an uncredited disco revival (The Cardigans' ageless "Lovefool") and alt rap like no one else (Cibo Matto's monster movie fantasia "Sci-Fi Wasabi"). The fest's 2010 relaunch did the original justice with incredible current talents like Miranda Lambert ("Me and Your Cigarettes"), Kate Nash ("Paris"), Metric ("Gimme Sympathy") and Tegan and Sara ("Arrow") on board.
