Maryland Deathfest -- said to be the biggest regular live extreme-metal extravaganza in North America, and bigger now than ever -- has been making Old Line State eardrums bleed every Memorial Day Weekend since 2003. The 2013 installment, aka MDF XI, features well over 60 bands and, for the first time, designates one venue specifically for punk and hardcore.
So the 20 ensembles included in this playlist -- from doom to grind to every too-loud species in between from all over the planet -- represent a mere sampling of the brutality destined to be committed in Baltimore from May 23 to May 26. Some have almost legendary names: Carcass, Pentagram, The Obsessed, Pagan Altar, Repulsion, Manilla Road. Some have just plain weird names: Righteous Pigs, Weekend Nachos (!?), Disciples of Christ, Rotten Sound, Ahumado Granujo from the Czech Republic, Terveet Kädet from Finland. But collectively, their metal weighs a ton.
