Middle Eastern Pop Sampler
by Rachel Devitt | June 7, 2013
Don't know anything about the wide, wild, wonderful world of Middle Eastern pop? We got you covered. This sampler takes a quick, (very) introductory tour of the current artists, songs and sounds that are making people in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, Central Asia and more move and groove. We've got representatives from the thriving Arabic hip-hop scene, which has been an active voice in many of the Arab Spring movements. You'll meet hipsters, folkies and artsy types like Idan Raichel, Mike Massy and Yasmine Hamdan who are helping to build alt rock scenes in Israel, Lebanon and beyond. And, of course, you'll also find plenty of high-gloss, high-drama dance pop divas, from Lebanon's Haifa Wehbe to Egypt's Shirene, from scene stalwarts like Amr Diab to up-and-comers like Saudi Arabia's Rakan, who are keeping the beautiful people on the dancefloor throughout the Middle East.
