Musical Tour: Latino USA
by Monika Fabian | October 5, 2013
There are myriad ways to take a musical tour through Latino USA. You could organize your explorations according to region, chronology or genre, just for starters. Consider this two-hour musical trip all three and then some. This exploration is also the Venn overlap between "Latino" and "USA": It looks at the instances when mainstream pop culture has embraced its Latin side and Latinos have paid homage to their stateside roots. We take a look at key crossovers over the years, beginning with 1930's rumba dance craze starter ["El Manisero."] Latin-flavored pop from non-Latin acts like Beck and Madonna is in there, too. There are also covers galore, from Michael Jackson in Spanish to bachata's Prince Royce and Leslie Grace transforming the oldies. Memorable cross-cultural collaborations from the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Afro-Cuban conguero Chano Pozo in "Manteca," as well as Latin musical cameos in television and movies also make the list. Finally, there are odes to spots all over the U.S.: "Miami," "Arizona Skies" and "Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Angeles." Enjoy the ride!
