New Release Sampler, 5/27/14

by Linda Ryan  |  May 27, 2014

Well, Memorial Day has come and gone, ushering in the unofficial start of summer — and the releases are getting hot! Check out Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse for a bit of musical drama. (Once a diva, always a diva, right?) Neil Young’s A Letter Home features a collection of covers. Produced by Jack White, Young’s album was recorded in White’s Voice-O-Graph recording booth in Nashville (which explains the old-timey, scratchy feel).

Cher Lloyd, on the other hand, has a decidedly new, downright shiny sound on her album Sorry I’m Late. With a handful of bright and bratty pop tunes, Cher clicks with the X-Factor generation, and beyond. If you enjoyed Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison’s Cheater’s Game — and judging from the amount of year-end lists it graced, many did — then you will adore Our Year. There’s just something about this husband-and-wife duo's graceful harmonies and reverential take on the music that can’t quite be explained. Contrived and manufactured country, this is not (and boy, are we ever lucky for that).

But maybe you want something a little more sparkly? Then check out electropop duo Cherub’s Year of the Caprese. “Disco Sh*t”? Hells to the yeah! And metal-heads will want to check out Crowbar’s Symmetry in Black and Trash Talk’s No Peace. Singles? Sure, we got ‘em. Check out new singles from Lucy Hale (aka Aria Montgomery from the television show Pretty Little Liars), boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, country singer Jana Kramer (aka Alex Dupre from One Tree Hill), REO Speedwagon, Latin star Elvis Crespo and dance phenom Deadmau5. It’s all here, just click play.
