New Release Sampler, 7/23/2013

by Dan Weiss  |  July 23, 2013

This is a huge week for rock 'n' roll, with the massive Kings of Leon returning with their fastest tune in a while, the playful "Supersoaker," while AFI loses not a speck of their blackened humor with the hypnotic, piano-driven "I Hope You Suffer." But gypsy punk underdogs Gogol Bordello are the real winners, with such hyper-speed, culturally-intersected barnburners as "It Is The Way You Name Your Ship" and "My Gypsy Auto Pilot." System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian makes a complete 180, commanding a brooding horn section on "Honeycharmed" and "End of Time," and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros burrow deeper into Americana soul with "Give Me a Sign" and "Better Days." All this and more in this week's roundup of new release highlights.
