Oklahoma: A Musical Tour
by Rachel Devitt | May 23, 2013
Oklahoma probably hasn't been one of those destinations you immediately associate with music, but after this playlist, it just might be. The Sooner State and its natives and current inhabitants have made a plethora of surprising, significant contributions to a rather dizzying range of popular musics, from jazz (Chet Baker! Don Cherry!) to rock (Kings of Leon! Leon Russell!), from R&B (The Gap Band! Color Me Badd!) to a whole heckuva lot of country. Oklahoma also helped to foster movements like Western swing, is home to many movers and shakers in Native American music and is the birthplace of both the Tulsa Sound (rockabilly blues) and Red Dirt music (OK-style outlaw country). As the state struggles to recover from the recent tornado devastation, it needs our attention and love more than ever. This playlist pays homage to Oklahoma's courageous citizens and their critical contributions to American popular music.
