On The Record
September 24, 2012
Antibalas spent the five years between Security and their self-titled fifth album working on a little smash Broadway musical about (who else?) Fela Kuti. Both the time spent basking in the master's creative life and the resulting desire to get back to their own groove show here. Things kick off with "Dirty Money," a funky, fiery party for the 99%. And the celebration-critique never quits, though it does veer into lots of thick, tightly crafted jams. Vocals play a big part in the tapestry of the groove, weaving in and out of the interlocking bits of Latin jazz, jam rock and Afro-funk.
