On The Record
May 21, 2012
The band name Gauntlet Hair explains nothing; the song title "Shout in Tongues" explains just about everything. This Denver-via-Chicago duo specializes in ecstatically yelped, profoundly reverb-slathered bedroom-pop collages in the time-honored Panda Bear vein, joyous and sentimental and vaguely nostalgic, like a thoroughly dosed John Hughes movie. A bit too revved up to qualify as chillwave, Gauntlet Hair is a feast of paint-blob keyboards and jangling guitars and gently concussive electronic beats (see "That's Your Call") and high-pitched yawps, digital-tribal and infectious. Succumb.
