Ones to Watch: Nikki Lane's 'All or Nothin'
by Stephanie Benson | May 7, 2014
We here at Rhapsody are always on the hunt for exciting, innovative new musicians. So we reinstated our Ones to Watch series, where we focus on one emerging artist for an entire month, and provide you with exclusive content from the promising up-and-comer. We've chosen feisty outlaw-country singer Nikki Lane as our featured artist for the month of May. Listen to her brand-new album, All or Nothin', now and read our country editor Linda Ryan's thoughts on the album, below:
Nikki Lane's retro-leaning alt country is so old it's new again. Produced by Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, All or Nothin' is a dark, twanging homage to having a good time. On opener "Right Time," Lane coos, "If you're looking for a good time/ You and me'll get on just fine/ It's always the right time/ To do the wrong thing," over vintage guitars and garage-y beats. It's down and dirty, and oh so enticing. Highlights include waltzing breakup ballad "Out of My Mind" (cowritten with Spiritualized's J. Spaceman); her duet with Auerbach, "Love's on Fire"; and the gritty "Sleep with a Stranger."
