Pistol Annies' Universe

by Linda Ryan  |  May 8, 2013

The Pistol Annies gave country music a much-needed dose of sass when Hell on Heels was released back in 2011. With such irreverent, cleverly written songs as “Trailer for Rent” and “Takin’ Pills,” the trio (Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe) showed that girls could raise just as much hell as their XY counterparts -- and in heels, no less.

The album's success proved that we were dealing with more than just Lambert’s “other” band. The deliciously wicked “Hell on Heels” was an irreverent breath of fresh air: At once old-timey and sinister, its frankness helped open doors for other tell-it-like-it-is artists like Kacey Musgraves, Maggie Rose and even young RaeLynn.

So here's a playlist peek into the Annies' extended universe: songs that may have inspired the trio, or songs the trio may have inspired. Either way, it’s a killer dose of modern country that packs a mean punch.
