Radio: '00s Indie

by Stephanie Benson

Indie music turned into a whole new beast at the turn of the century, thanks to laptops and blogs and major labels with their own "indie" subsidiaries. The term "indie" itself may have become nothing more than a brand name, a subculture spearheaded by hipster literati and glitterati, made into a serious cash cow by Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and a bunch of other festivals that popped up throughout the decade. But who cares about all that when some seriously fantastic music came out of it?

So, we've decided to encapsulate this time in independent-spirited sounds with our shiny new '00s Indie radio station. This means you'll get some of the most diverse music of the decade, from Williamsburg to the Mission, from the start-of-the-decade's gritty, snarling garage rockers (The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes) to post-punk revivalists (Interpol, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand), ambitious art-rockers (TV on the Radio), baroque Canadian collectives (Arcade Fire), guitar-pop greats (Spoon), electro-pop giants (Hot Chip), dance-punk pioneers (LCD Soundsystem), lo-fi buzz bands (No Age), pristine psychedelic poppers (Grizzly Bear), beardy folksters (Bon Iver), sensitive gents (Death Cab for Cutie), sassy sirens (Bat for Lashes), experimentalists of the highest order (Animal Collective), and indie veterans continuing to rule the roost (Beck, Modest Mouse). Oh, yeah, and a whole lot of bands with "Neon," "Crystal" or various animals in their names. Enjoy!
