Radio: Indie Chill
by Stephanie Benson | August 3, 2014
Once upon a time, indie music was not often associated with cocktail lounges and makeout sessions. Nowadays, though, there are plenty of smooth, silky sounds coming out of the indie landscape, from narcotic chillwave (Washed Out, jj) to sensual dream pop (The xx) to moody melodic pop (Beach House). That's not to say there aren't a few older gems sprinkled among the fray here, from early Cat Power to Portishead to Modest Mouse. The "chill" in this station's title is meant to be interpreted in myriad ways, whether you're looking for a little emotional comfort (Radiohead and Bon Iver should help ease your pain), a mental escape to the tropics (Panda Bear and Blue Hawaii will quickly transport you), or a seductive soundtrack to a cozy night in, courtesy of slick soul men like How to Dress Well and James Blake. Press play, and just chill.
